The Accountant plays a crucial role in managing the financial aspects of our organisation. This position involves a combination of accounting responsibilities, payroll processing and tracking restricted funds. The successful candidate will ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data and assist in the preparation of financial reports and audit documents to maintain compliance with tax laws, labour laws and organisational policies in all countries of operation.
Key responsibilities
The Accountant will be responsible for the following:
Accounting:
Maintain and update financial records, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger entries.
Ensure compliance with company financial policies.
Prepare and process journals, reconciliations and monthly management accounts.
Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and financial forecasts.
Monitor and analyse financial data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
Maintaining the Fixed Asset Register and depreciation of assets.
Payroll Processing:
Manage the organisation's payroll processing, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
Calculate and process payroll deductions, including taxes, benefits, and contributions.
Filing of statutory deductions on or before the due date with relevant authorities.
Proper record keeping to ensure compliance.
Address payroll inquiries and discrepancies from staff and provide necessary support.
Financial Reporting:
Assist COO/Accountants with the preparation and presentation of financial statements to the Board.
Assist with the preparation of the audit file and the annual financial audits and restricted grant reporting as required.
Restricted Funds and Grant Accounting:
Track and manage restricted funds to ensure compliance with donor restrictions.
Allocate expenses to grants and prepare grant financial reports.
Ensure accurate and timely reporting on the utilisation of grant funds.
Liaise with the fundraising team to properly allocate and record all incoming donations.
Compliance:
Stay up-to-date with nonprofit accounting standards, tax regulations, and HR laws.
Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
System Proficiency:
Preferred experience using Xero accounting software.
Experience with Calxa financial reporting software is advantageous.
Ability to effectively utilise Xero for financial management and reporting.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent certification is a plus.
Proven experience in nonprofit accounting and financial management.
Familiarity with HR procedures, payroll processing, and labour laws.
Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
