We are currently recruiting an Advocacy & Communications Coordinator to join our team in Sudan.

This is position is based in Kenya, with up to 50% travel to various locations across Sudan.

The role is a 12-month fixed-term international contract (with possibility of extension, depending on funding). Contract terms, salary and benefits will be discussed at HR Interview stage.

About the Opportunity

You will be the strategic lead for advocacy and external communications across Relief International’s Sudan program, which operates in one of the world’s most complex and politically sensitive humanitarian environments.

As Advocacy and Communications Coordinator, you will design, drive, and oversee the delivery of a comprehensive Advocacy and Communication Strategy that advances RI’s humanitarian goals and amplifies the voices and needs of conflict-affected Sudanese. Your work will ensure RI’s positioning is principled, evidence-based, and aligned with International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law.

Your Responsibilities

This role includes the following responsibilities.

  • Advocacy & Representation: Lead the development and rollout of RI Sudan’s Advocacy and Communications Strategy, produce policy briefs and key messages, and represent RI in platforms with UN, donors, and the diplomatic community.
  • Strategic Coordination: Work with program teams to identify advocacy entry points, align efforts with program objectives, and integrate advocacy into proposal design.
  • Capacity Building & Content: Mentor colleagues in communications, develop case studies, visibility products, and campaign materials, ensuring quality and strategic relevance.
  • Media & Risk Management: Coordinate media engagements, branding, and external communications with HQ, while monitoring reputational and operational risks.
  • Management & Leadership: Provide strategic direction to field focal points, oversee team performance, build capacity, and foster a collaborative, accountable culture aligned with RI values.

About You

You will bring the following experience and skills.

Essential criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Journalism, International Development, Law, or related field.
  • Substantial progressive experience in advocacy and communications within humanitarian settings with at least two years in an expat position
  • Proven track record of engaging in high-level advocacy and policy influence in conflict zones.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; ability to produce strategic communication products.
  • Deep understanding of the Sudan humanitarian context and geopolitics.
  • Knowledge of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights Law.
  • Strong interpersonal, coordination, and relationship-building skills.

Desirable criteria

  • Arabic language proficiency.
  • Experience with consortia and inter-agency advocacy initiatives.
  • Previous experience supporting or managing remotely located teams.
  • Familiarity with donor engagement strategies and humanitarian access advocacy.
