We are looking for experienced Art and Photography Curators to contribute their expertise to projects involving the evaluation, selection, attribution and presentation of artworks and photographs. This opportunity is suited to professionals with practical experience managing or working with art collections, exhibitions, galleries, auction houses, museums, archives or photographic collections.
In this role, you will assess individual works and collections, determine their relevance to specific themes or exhibitions, evaluate attribution and provenance information, and review how artworks and photographs are documented and presented. You will also identify potential ownership, rights, condition or display concerns and provide clear written explanations to support your professional recommendations.
The ideal candidate combines strong subject knowledge with careful research, attention to detail and the ability to make informed curatorial decisions.
Artwork and Collection Selection: Review individual works or collections and determine their suitability for specific exhibitions, themes, projects or collection requirements.
Attribution and Classification: Assess available information about an artwork or photograph, including its attribution, date, medium, edition and other identifying details.
Photography and Print Assessment: Evaluate photographic prints and editions, including print types and processes, and distinguish between vintage and later prints where the available information supports an assessment.
Provenance Review: Identify gaps in ownership history, incomplete documentation, questionable attributions and other concerns that may affect a work's credibility or collection suitability.
Condition and Display Assessment: Flag potential condition issues, handling concerns or risks associated with displaying or preserving works.
Cataloguing and Documentation: Review titles, catalogue entries, exhibition labels and descriptions to ensure they are accurate, appropriate and fairly represent the work.
Rights and Ownership Checks: Identify potential copyright, consent, licensing or ownership concerns that may require further review.
Curatorial Recommendations: Explain why a work is suitable for a particular exhibition or collection, or why its attribution, provenance or presentation may be uncertain.
Decision Reporting: Provide concise written explanations for assessments and recommendations so that reviewers can understand the evidence and reasoning behind each decision.
Professional experience as an Art Curator, Assistant Curator, Collections Specialist, Exhibitions Specialist, Gallery Director, Auction House Specialist, Art or Photography Archivist, Registrar or in a closely related role.
Practical experience making curatorial or collection-related decisions, such as selecting works, assessing attribution, planning exhibitions, managing collections, or handling acquisitions and loans.
Strong knowledge of art or photography, with the ability to evaluate works within their relevant historical, artistic or collection context.
For photography-focused work, familiarity with photographic prints, editions and photographic processes.
Understanding of provenance, attribution, cataloguing, ownership and the considerations involved in presenting or acquiring artworks.
Ability to identify incomplete information, doubtful attributions, documentation gaps and potential rights or condition concerns.
Strong attention to detail and sound professional judgment.
Clear written English communication skills, including the ability to explain curatorial decisions and recommendations concisely.
Candidates with experience in museums, art galleries, auction houses, private collections, archives, photography collections or exhibition management are encouraged to apply. Experience evaluating acquisitions, managing loans, researching provenance or preparing works for public display will be particularly relevant.
Application: Submit your resume and a short professional profile highlighting your curatorial, collections, art or photography experience.
Curation Interview: Complete a short conversation about your experience with exhibitions, collections, attribution and related professional decisions. No advance preparation, written assignment or review of materials is required.
Experience Review: Your professional background will be assessed against the project's requirements.
Onboarding: If selected, you will receive the relevant project guidelines and instructions.
Initial Task: You will begin with an initial task, which will be reviewed before you proceed with further assignments.
