Mate MFV Alert

Job Description

• The following permanent position has become available within our pelagic fleet. This position will operate from our Lucky Star site in St Helena Bay.
• The incumbent will report to the Skipper of the vessel MFV Alert.
• The successful applicant will support the Skipper in the bridge and handle certain tasks on deck.

Key Job Outputs

• Assist the Mate with the following duties:
• Maintaining a safe navigational watch
• Leading and participating in fishing activities on the deck
• Understanding and operating hydraulic and electronic equipment onboard
• Ensuring overall safety of the crew
• Coordinate net repairs onboard
• Responsibility for the vessel in the absence of the Skipper

Knowledge, Skills and Attributes

Working knowledge of the following Legislation

• Maritime Occupational Safety Regulations
• Code of Safe Working Practices for Fishing Vessels
• Safety Manual System of the Pelagic Fleet Operations
• Small Pelagic Fleet permit conditions and Operating Manual
• Net mending skills
• Good knowledge of ropes, wires, knots and splicing
• Strong communicator

Qualifications, Competencies and Experience

• Minimum 3 years' experience on Purse Seine Fishing Vessels
• Bilingual
• Valid SAMSA medical certificate
• Valid Grade 4 Watchkeeper Certificate/Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on fishing vessels (≥24m) limited waters [STCW-F 11/4] - minimum
• Valid Restricted Radio License
• Pre Sea and a Seamans Discharge Book
• Valid Marine Fire Fighting and First Aid at Sea Certificates
