Job description

Job Summary We are seeking a highly competent and experienced Mechanical Engineer with specialised expertise in estate sewage systems, wastewater management, and stormwater infrastructure to join our project development team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the planning, design coordination, installation, supervision, testing, and commissioning of sewage treatment systems, wastewater collection networks, pumping stations, stormwater management systems, and related mechanical infrastructure for residential estates, high-rise buildings, duplexes, terraces, and large-scale property development projects. The ideal candidate must have strong practical experience in estate infrastructure, a solid understanding of mechanical building services, and the ability to coordinate effectively with civil and structural engineers, infrastructure consultants, contractors, and project managers to deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable systems. Key Responsibilities Estate Sewage and Wastewater Management: Plan, coordinate, and supervise the installation of sewage collection, conveyance, treatment, and disposal systems for residential estates and property developments. Oversee the installation and operation of sewage treatment plants, wastewater treatment facilities, septic systems, and other approved wastewater management solutions. Review sewage network layouts, pumping arrangements, equipment specifications, and associated mechanical drawings. Supervise the installation of sewage pumps, lift stations, pumping chambers, valves, pipelines, and related mechanical equipment. Monitor the performance of sewage and wastewater systems to ensure effective operation, reliability, and compliance with approved design requirements. Identify and resolve issues relating to sewage flow, blockages, pumping capacity, odour control, equipment failure, and system performance. Coordinate testing, commissioning, and handover of sewage infrastructure. Develop and monitor preventive maintenance requirements for installed sewage and wastewater equipment. Stormwater Management and Drainage Infrastructure: Coordinate the planning and implementation of stormwater management systems for residential estates and building developments. Work with civil engineers and infrastructure consultants on stormwater collection, conveyance, pumping, and discharge arrangements. Review stormwater management plans, drainage layouts, pump specifications, and associated technical documentation. Supervise the installation of stormwater pumps, pumping stations, culverts, drainage-related mechanical equipment, and other associated systems where applicable. Assess stormwater management challenges, including flooding risks, inadequate discharge capacity, water accumulation, and equipment limitations. Support the implementation of sustainable stormwater solutions, including attenuation, retention, controlled discharge, and rainwater reuse where appropriate. Coordinate inspection, testing, and commissioning of stormwater pumping and management systems. Ensure installed systems operate effectively and are suitable for the development's site conditions and infrastructure requirements. Mechanical Design Review and Technical Coordination: Review mechanical drawings, technical specifications, equipment schedules, and installation details for sewage and stormwater systems. Coordinate with civil and structural engineers on pipeline routes, gradients, manholes, pumping chambers, foundations, access requirements, and equipment locations. Work with electrical engineers on pump power supplies, control panels, instrumentation, alarms, and automation systems. Coordinate with architects, MEP consultants, quantity surveyors, and project managers to resolve design conflicts and ensure constructability. Evaluate equipment selections, pump capacities, system requirements, and technical submissions. Identify design inconsistencies and recommend practical, safe, and cost-effective engineering solutions. Construction Supervision and Project Coordination: Supervise contractors and subcontractors executing sewage, wastewater, and stormwater mechanical works. Conduct regular site inspections to ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, and project schedules. Monitor installation quality, materials, equipment, workmanship, and construction progress. Coordinate procurement requirements, equipment delivery, installation sequencing, and site activities. Participate in project meetings, technical reviews, inspections, and progress assessments. Prepare site reports, inspection records, technical assessments, and progress updates. Identify project risks, delays, defects, and technical challenges and recommend corrective actions. Support project delivery within approved budgets, timelines, safety requirements, and quality standards. Testing, Commissioning, and Maintenance: Develop and oversee inspection, testing, and commissioning procedures for sewage and stormwater mechanical systems. Verify the operational performance of pumps, motors, control systems, valves, and associated equipment. Ensure relevant functional tests and performance checks are completed before system handover. Coordinate the preparation of operation and maintenance manuals, equipment records, as-built documentation, and handover reports. Recommend preventive maintenance schedules and operational procedures to improve system reliability. Provide technical support for troubleshooting and resolving operational issues after installation. Environmental Compliance, Safety, and Quality Assurance: Ensure sewage and wastewater systems are designed, installed, and operated in accordance with applicable environmental, public health, engineering, and safety requirements. Coordinate with relevant consultants and authorities on wastewater treatment, discharge requirements, and environmental approvals. Monitor construction quality and ensure appropriate inspection and testing procedures are followed. Promote safe working practices during excavation-related activities, confined-space work, equipment installation, and commissioning. Support measures that reduce environmental pollution, flooding risks, system failures, and unnecessary operating costs. Qualifications and Experience Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline. Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience, preferably in estate infrastructure, building services, wastewater management, or construction engineering. Demonstrable practical experience with sewage collection systems, wastewater treatment plants, sewage pumping stations, and associated mechanical equipment. Strong knowledge of stormwater management infrastructure, particularly pumping systems, stormwater control equipment, and coordination with estate drainage networks. Experience supervising contractors, reviewing technical drawings, conducting site inspections, and coordinating construction activities. Ability to interpret mechanical, civil, structural, and infrastructure drawings. Knowledge of pumps, motors, pipelines, valves, control systems, and equipment selection for wastewater and stormwater applications. Familiarity with testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance of sewage and stormwater systems. Proficiency in AutoCAD and relevant engineering design or project coordination software. Knowledge of applicable Nigerian engineering standards, environmental requirements, and health and safety regulations. Professional registration with COREN or eligibility for registration will be an advantage. Strong technical reporting, problem-solving, communication, and project coordination skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing multiple project priorities. Preferred Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate should demonstrate: Experience working on residential estates, multi-building developments, or large-scale property development projects. Practical involvement in sewage treatment plants, wastewater pumping stations, sewage networks, and stormwater management systems. Experience coordinating mechanical infrastructure with civil drainage, roadworks, utilities, and other estate services. A strong understanding of the relationship between system design, construction execution, long-term maintenance, and operating costs. The ability to identify technical risks and recommend practical solutions before they affect project delivery. A hands-on approach to site supervision, quality control, contractor coordination, and commissioning. A commitment to environmental responsibility, system reliability, and engineering best practices. What We Offer The opportunity to contribute to major residential estate and property development projects. A professional working environment with multidisciplinary project teams. Opportunities to apply specialist engineering knowledge to practical infrastructure challenges. Competitive remuneration commensurate with qualifications, experience, and technical expertise.
