Key Responsibilities
Support the Eastleigh Maternity Home Centre Manager in running of the facility in Neonatal Care and Monitoring
Provide comprehensive nursing care to newborns admitted at the NBU/kangaroo care unit.
Monitor vital signs, feeding patterns, weight, and general well-being of all newborns.
Identify and escalate any signs of distress or complications promptly to the attending clinician.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in neonatal charts and patient records.
Management and accurate documentation and Reporting of all services rendered.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date neonatal charts, including vital signs, feeding logs, temperature monitoring, and weight tracking.
Record all nursing interventions, medications administered, and observations in patient files.
Document newborn screening results, immunizations, and any referrals or escalations made.
Ensure discharge summaries are properly completed and shared with mothers, including home care instructions.
Update and submit daily, weekly, and monthly neonatal care statistics to the Matron or Centre Manager.
Always adhere to MSI documentation and data confidentiality policies.
Work closely with midwives, clinicians, and other staff to ensure continuity of care.
Participate in ward rounds and contribute to clinical discussions and discharge planning.
Prepare and submit reports on neonatal outcomes and service statistics as required.
Effective participation and support of the centre team both in quality assurance and promotional activities
Offer quality services including the full spectrum of MSI services
Ensure proper use of medical equipment and supplies and notifies Centre Manager of repairs, maintenance or replacements of equipment and instruments
Report all major and minor incidents within 24 hours
Actively promote the work of the centre to generate demand for the services, e.g. educational and awareness-raising events
Positively promote MSIK as a leading, quality provider of reproductive & sexual health
services.
Undertake root cause analysis of incidences and develop action plans, ensuring that this leads to change in practice
Establish and maintain effective communication with clients, relatives and team members to contribute to the active resolution of potentially complex situations, complaints and issues
Lead on the implementation of patient safety strategies as shall be recommended by the quality team
Share best practices and drive improvements in patient care through regular review meetings and CMEs
In conjunction with the consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist & the Matron, the Neonatal Nurse will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards within clinical teams
Efficient and effective service delivery of the full range of MSIK services
Provide high-quality neonatal nursing care to all newborns, ensuring safe transition from delivery to discharge.
Support midwives and clinicians during deliveries and immediately post-delivery to ensure proper newborn assessment and resuscitation when necessary.
Conduct routine newborn examinations and promptly escalate any complications to the attending clinician.
Promote and support exclusive breastfeeding through counselling and hands-on guidance to mothers.
Ensure timely immunization, cord care, thermal regulation, and hygiene for all newborns in line with MSIK protocols.
Participate in maternal and newborn postnatal reviews to ensure continuity of care and early detection of complications.
Collaborate with other staff to deliver integrated maternal, newborn, and family planning services within the maternity unit.
Maintain high standards of infection prevention and client safety in all neonatal care activities
Qualifications
Diploma or Degree in Nursing (KRCHN or BScN) from a recognized institution.
Registration and valid practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Specialized training in neonatal or paediatric nursing is an added advantage.
Minimum of 2 years' experience in a maternity or neonatal care setting.
Experience working in a high-volume facility is desirable.
