The Accountant supports the financial operations of the GHSC-PSM Kenya office by ensuring accurate financial recordkeeping, compliance with Chemonics and U.S. Government regulations, and timely reporting. The Accountant will work closely with the Finance Manager to maintain financial integrity and transparency.
Responsibilities include:
Receive and review invoices/payment requests for accuracy and completeness, record financial transactions in the project accounting system, submit general journals for approval, prepare bank transfers and checks, and ensure timely payment by the project
Assist the Finance Manager to prepare payroll for all local staff and consultants
Prepare documentation for payment transactions and ensure that GJs include complete back-up documentation per the Chemonics Field Accounting and Compliance Manual
Liaise with local bank, reconcile monthly bank statements, and verify all deposits and withdrawals
Maintain up-to-date organized soft copy and hard copy finance records documenting all transactions, approvals, etc. in compliance with the Chemonics Field Accounting and Compliance Manual
Track sub-ledger balances, including receivable accounts for individual staff ensuring that outstanding travel advances are settled before issuing new advances
Prepare monthly bank reconciliations, cash reconciliations, and wire transfer requests based on projected expenditures
Work closely with the Finance Manager to ensure compliance with all applicable rules and procedures related to finance, and provide guidance as needed on withholdings, VAT reimbursements, and work with the Kenyan Revenue Authority
Ensure project compliance with the Chemonics Field Accounting and Compliance Manual and Kenya-specific accounting and tax requirements, assisting with internal and external compliance reviews and audits
Support the preparation of financial data for donor reporting
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field
Minimum two (2) to four (4) years of relevant experience, preferably on donor-funded projects
Prior experience working on a project or within an organization with cash basis accounting is highly preferred
Familiarity with U.S. Government and Kenyan financial regulations and requirements required
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Experience with Abacus, QuickBooks, or similar accounting software is an advantage
