About the role
The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer role involves providing senior nursing supervision across both Out-Patient and In-Patient units.
The position includes leading, mentoring, and appraising nursing staff, maintaining high standards of nursing practice, and ensuring adherence to clinical governance and infection-prevention standards.
The role also involves acting as a senior resource for clinical decision-making and supporting multidisciplinary teamwork.
Responsibilities
Provide senior nursing leadership and supervision within Out-Patient and In-Patient streams.
Supervise, mentor, and appraise nursing staff to support their professional development.
Maintain accurate, complete, and timely nursing records.
Apply infection-prevention and clinical-governance standards.
Maintain valid Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) registration/licence and Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme (MCPDP) compliance, along with adherence to internal policies.
Act as a senior resource for clinical escalation and decision-making within assigned units.
Coordinate injection, dressing, and minor-procedure clinics (Out-Patient stream).
Oversee shift handover quality and admission/discharge planning within wards (In-Patient stream).
Required skills
Leadership and supervision of nursing staff.
Knowledge of nursing practice relevant to both Out-Patient and In-Patient care.
Competence in nursing assessment, care planning, and medication administration.
Understanding of patient safety, infection prevention, and clinical governance.
Effective communication with patients, families, and colleagues.
Accurate record-keeping and clinical system usage.
Experience
Minimum of 8 years of post-registration nursing experience, including experience at the Principal Nursing Officer grade or equivalent.
Education
Registered Nurse (RN) qualification from an accredited School/College of Nursing or a Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc/BSc Nursing) from a recognised university.
