The Opportunity
This is a hands-on mainframe DBA role supporting both the BAS production environment and the development environment on DB2 for z/OS, MVS and CICS.
You'll perform Database Administration functions with full administrator rights, own Release Management and Version Control, and provide reports and recommendations to your supervisor and management on system performance and improvements. You'll also be the person developers come to for guidance on SQL coding, and the person who escalates risks and database unavailability to the Supervising DBA.
If you want deep mainframe work with real ownership — not ticket-queue support — this is that role.
This Role Is a Strong Fit If You
Are a working DB2 for z/OS DBA (or a Senior Operator ready to step up) with genuine mainframe depth
Are fluent across the classic stack — MVS, CICS, VSAM, JCL, REXX, SQL
Enjoy performance and tuning work, not just keeping the lights on
Are comfortable standing in front of clients and, when needed, supervising a small team
Automate what you can rather than repeating it
What You'll Do
Day-to-Day
Authorise TSO user-IDs and grant relevant privileges to specific tables within production departments' databases
Monitor production reports so scheduled reports stay within agreed execution times, and improve throughput of reports on the BAS system
Provide support to end users of the MVS environment
Work effectively as part of the team and support the team's goals
Identify problems and raise them to your supervisor with enough lead time to avert crises
Provide DB2 performance and tuning suggestions
Perform Release Management functionality
Database Administration
Perform Database Quality Assurance and review all SQL code for programs destined for release to production
Periodically perform standby duty — responding to DB2/CICS/VSAM problems raised by production departments and by maintenance team members
Set up and analyse extents for DB2 tables and VSAM files in production, with continuous monitoring and rectification
Monitor online transactions and suggest optimisation opportunities
Continuously improve procedures used within platform support and operations support
Create and set up new DB2/CICS/VSAM objects when a new department implements the BAS system
Monitor VSAM splits and schedule VSAM and database reorganisations as needed
Set up and perform database refreshes from production database tables to non-production databases
Create new database tables, table spaces and indexes, and alter the structure of existing tables as agreed with the senior DBA
Perform release management and version control tasks when required
Peer review other team members' procedural documents
Supervision & Client Engagement
Supervise a small DBA team when required
Complete weekly status feedback and reporting
Assist team members with DBA and Release Management tasks
Attend client meetings and workshops representing the project
