About the Project:

The Global Evergreening Alliance Ltd (GEA) have developed an innovative model to harness climate financing for land restoration in Africa, with the first program co-developed with Climate Asset Management (CAM) as the largest small holder farmer-driven land restoration program in Africa. The portfolio of restoration programs in the continent falls under the banner of Restore Africa. The program goal is: To improve livelihoods, food security and resilience to climate change in Africa through the restoration of ecosystem services and the improved management of agricultural and forest areas. The Program, financed through carbon benefits investment aims to restore close to 2 million hectares of agricultural land, sequester over 30 million tons of CO2, and improve livelihoods of 1.5 million households in six countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. CRS is the lead implementing partner for the program in the country and will work in partnership with Caritas (Moroto, Tororo, Fort Portal and Hoima), CARE/JESE, World Vision, ICRAF, ECOTRUST and Uganda Landcare Network.

Job Summary:

The Driver will operate organizational vehicles safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with Ugandan traffic laws and internal driving policies to support effective program implementation. The role is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of passengers, pedestrians, other road users, and the vehicle at all times during both town-based and field assignments, while upholding responsible stewardship of organizational resources.

Roles and Key Responsibilities:

Transportation & Safety

  • Transport CRS staff and visitors as assigned, ensuring timely and safe movement.
  • Ensure the safety of all passengers and secure all luggage appropriately.
  • Adhere strictly to speed limits, Ugandan traffic laws, and all CRS travel and safety guidelines.
  • Ensure that all passengers use seat belts at all times.
  • Follow proper communication procedures, including maintaining contact while on duty.

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Maintain assigned vehicles in sound mechanical condition and report any defects promptly.
  • Ensure vehicles are washed, cleaned, and in presentable condition at all times.
  • Ensure timely fueling and servicing of vehicles in accordance with maintenance schedules.
  • Immediately report any faults, breakdowns, incidents, or accidents to the Transport Controller.
  • Ensure First Aid kits are complete and up to date, and that all spare parts and tools are available in the assigned vehicle.
  • Ensure that all vehicle tools are always kept securely in allocated vehicles.

Record Keeping

  • Ensure all vehicles are equipped with log sheets and pens at all times.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle records, including trip details, fuel usage, mileage, and time logs.
  • Record fuel fill-ups promptly in the log sheet and complete workshop request forms for submission.
  • Submit monthly vehicle log sheets in a timely manner.
  • Conduct daily vehicle checks and submit the daily checklist report.
  • Prepare and submit field trip reports after every assignment.

Delivering and Receiving Mail

  • Deliver mail, cheques, and equipment promptly and maintain records in the delivery book.
  • Check the post office regularly for incoming mail.
  • Receive mail from partners and sub-offices and deliver it to the CRS office securely.

Insurance Follow-up

  • Ensure that vehicle comprehensive and third-party insurance are valid at all times.
  • Notify the Transport Controller at least two weeks before insurance renewal is due.

Mechanical Activities

  • Road test and certify all vehicles returning from the garage to ensure they are in proper working condition.

Basic Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) / ‘O’ Level Certificate.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ proven driving experience, with basic mechanical skills.
  • Valid, accident-free driving licence with Classes A, B, C, and D.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the geographical area of assignment.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Training in defensive driving is an added advantage.
  • Demonstrate strong defensive driving skills, including hazard awareness, anticipation, safe braking, and adherence to all road and safety protocols.

  • Strong service orientation with a focus on meeting the needs of staff and visitors.

Required Languages: Excellent command of written and spoken English is required.
