As an Editorial Intern, you will play a crucial role in our Preliminary Services stage, ensuring that every manuscript is clear, coherent, and error-free. You will gain hands-on experience in both in-depth editing and final-stage proofreading, working with a diverse range of literary projects. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your editorial skills in a professional publishing environment

Key Responsibilties


Editing: Improve the overall quality, clarity, and structure of manuscripts by refining grammar, syntax, flow, and consistency.
Proofreading: Conduct final, meticulous checks to catch any surface-level errors, including typos, spelling mistakes, and punctuation inconsistencies, ensuring every book is print-ready.
Compliance: Ensure manuscripts adhere to standard style guides, whenever necessary, (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago) as required.
Collaboration: Work alongside our editorial team and leverage software tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency while applying nuanced human judgment.

Educational Background

Preferred Fields of Study:


A Diploma, Higher Diploma or Bachelor's degree from a reputable Kenyan institution of higher learning.
English Language and Linguistics
Journalism and Mass Communication
Literature
Education (with a focus on English)
Consideration for other qualifications: Candidates with degrees in other fields will be considered if they can demonstrate exceptional command of the English language and a strong passion for publishing


Academic Qualification


Exceptional Command of the English Language: This is non-negotiable. The candidate must have a deep and intuitive understanding of English grammar, syntax, punctuation, and spelling.
Keen Attention to Detail: A proven ability to spot minor errors, inconsistencies, and typos that others would overlook. This is the most critical skill for this role.
Strong Analytical and Critical Thinking Skills: The ability to not only find errors but also to understand the context, tone, and structure of a manuscript to make meaningful improvements.
Excellent Time Management and Organizational Skills: The capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
High Level of Computer Proficiency: Must be comfortable using word processing software (especially Microsoft Word and its 'Track Changes' feature) and be able to quickly learn and utilize our AI-powered editing tools


While this is an internship position, any prior experience in writing, editing, or proofreading is highly advantageous. This can include:


Work on a student newspaper, magazine, or journal.
A personal blog with a history of well-written content.
Freelance editing or proofreading projects.
Previous internships in a related field (communications, marketing, etc.)
