Short Description / Purpose of Job
The Secunda Operations Electrical Engineering team provides technical support to various electrical maintenance departments, who own and maintain the electrical equipment used in the Sasol Secunda Operations petro-chemical plant in Secunda.
The engineering support provided includes technical support on day-to-day engineering issues arising from the plant, as well as longer term asset management support for the electrical equipment throughout the factory. This includes: fault-finding during breakdown scenario's, providing inputs into RCA's related to equipment failures, providing engineering guidance for electrical changes made on plant equipment, ensuring compliance to engineering specifications/standards and managing deviations, commissioning support for equipment after maintenance or after equipment replacement/renewal, reviewing and compiling of project documents & review of electrical designs, project initiation, front-end loading & support, as well as subject matter expert support for specific electrical equipment groups. The support also includes identification of electrical equipment/system risks and active management of these risks in support of the plant's production and safety targets.
The Electrical Engineering Utilities team specifically provides technical support to two of the business units within Secunda Operations, namely the Powerstation and Water & Ash business units. A total of 7 electrical engineers make up the Utilities plant support team, all reporting to the Electrical Engineering Team Lead for Utilities.
A wide range of electrical equipment is supported, including:
HV/MV/LV switchgear, transformers and cables
MV/LV VSD's and motors
Motor control centres
Synchronous Generators & Gas Turbines
Protection systems & relays
Industrial UPS systems
Battery back-up systems for protection and control systems (chargers & batteries)
Earthing & lightning protection systems
Key Responsibilities
Know & understand electrical equipment failure modes and failure trends in order to manage equipment reliability & predictability.
Identify & mitigate electrical equipment risks through engineering out / design improvement / renewal / redesign.
Ensure compliance to electrical specifications or standards for projects executed in your area of responsibility, as well as for any changes to plant electrical equipment or systems. Identify & manage deviations when necessary.
Provide technical & commissioning support to plant electrical maintenance teams on complex electrical systems.
Provide technical & commissioning support to project teams during execution of electrical projects.
Ensure best practices on electrical systems and maintain compliance in own area of responsibility.
Ensure project success by adherence to cost, schedule and quality targets for small single discipline electrical projects where the role of engineering or project manager is fulfilled.
Review project documentation & electrical designs to ensure proposed solutions are compliant to standards/specifications, fit for purpose, cost-effective and will integrate with existing plant equipment.
Identify specific electrical equipment in your area of responsibility and that can have a significant production impact, and become subject matter expert.
Assist with compilation of asset renewal plans & roadmaps in your area of responsibility, based on equipment condition and business risk.
Take the lead or assist with electrical equipment incident investigations when production losses are incurred.
Set criteria for specific electrical maintenance strategies from the specifications/standards and OEM requirements & assist electrical maintenance departments with review of maintenance strategies for critical equipment.
Assist in the assessment & selection of external electrical service providers & contractors by measuring their technical competence.
Conduct technical bid evaluations for electrical work and projects.
Assist with conducting risk assessments on electrical work and projects to ensure safe execution of work. Assist project managers to manage and oversee the safety of external service providers during project execution.
Maintain healthy and stable relationships with engineering contractors, consultants and service providers.
Enhance knowledge and understanding of the electrical equipment in your area of responsibility and share knowledge with engineers-in-training.

Formal Education
Bachelor of Engineering (B Eng) degree in Electrical Engineering from a University, or
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Electrical Engineering from a University
