Job Summary

The Senior School English Teacher is responsible for delivering high quality English Language and Literature instruction to students in the senior secondary classes. The role involves developing students' reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills while preparing them for internal and external examinations.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Instruction


Plan and deliver engaging and effective English lessons in line with the school curriculum.
Teach core areas such as grammar, comprehension, composition, oral English, and literature.
Use a variety of teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
Prepare lesson notes and instructional materials in advance.


Curriculum Implementation


Implement approved curriculum, such as national curriculum, IGCSE, WAEC, or other relevant standards.
Break down schemes of work into weekly lesson plans.
Ensure proper coverage of syllabus within the academic term.


Assessment and Evaluation


Set tests, assignments, and examinations in line with school policies.
Mark and grade students' work promptly and accurately.
Provide constructive feedback to help students improve.
Prepare report cards and progress reports.


Student Development


Support students in developing strong communication and critical thinking skills.
Prepare students for external examinations such as WAEC, NECO, IGCSE, or SAT where applicable.
Identify students with learning difficulties and provide support or refer appropriately.


Classroom Management


Maintain discipline and create a positive learning environment.
Manage classroom behavior effectively.
Encourage active participation and respect among students.


Co-Curricular Involvement


Participate in literary activities such as debates, drama, spelling bees, and writing clubs.
Support school events and programs.
Mentor students in competitions and public speaking activities.


Record Keeping and Administration


Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessment, and student progress.
Submit lesson plans, results, and reports as required.
Attend staff meetings, training sessions, and school functions.


Professional Development


Stay updated with modern teaching methods and curriculum changes.
Participate in workshops, seminars, and training programs.
Continuously improve teaching practice.


Qualifications and Requirements


Bahelor's Degree in English, English Education, or a related field.
Teaching certification or license is an added advantage.
Minimum of 2 to 5 years teaching experience in a secondary school.
Strong command of spoken and written English.
