Key Responsibilities
Strategic Farm Management:
Develop and implement annual cropping plans, crop rotation schedules, and resource allocation for rain- fed and irrigated crops (sweet maize, cassava, oil palm, plantain and vegetables).
Oversee the establishment and management of agro-forestry plots, orchard plantations, and nursery operations.
Drive adoption of precision agriculture, drip/sprinkler/centre pivot irrigation, and integrated pest management.
Production and Operations:
Supervise all field operations: land preparation, planting, fertigation, pest/disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.
Manage farm machinery fleet (tractors, planters, harvesters, sprayers) and irrigation equipment; schedule maintenance and repairs.
Ensure optimal use of greenhouses and processing facilities (where applicable).
Team Leadership and Training:
Lead a team of agronomists, supervisors, and 30 - 50 farm workers; provide technical direction and performance management.
Build capacity of local staff through hands-on training in modern agronomic practices, equipment operation, and safety standards.
Sustainability and Compliance:
Ensure all operations comply with Nigerian agricultural regulations, environmental standards, and World Bank/AfDB safeguard policies (where project-linked).
Implement soil and water conservation measures, organic waste recycling, and biodiversity protection.
Monitor and report on key ESG indicators (water use efficiency, carbon footprint, soil health).
Financial and Reporting:
Prepare annual farm budgets, monitor production costs, and optimize input usage (seeds, fertilizers, agrochemicals).
Track crop yields, post-harvest losses, and profitability; present monthly performance reports to management.
Manage procurement of farm inputs and coordinate off-take agreements with commodity buyers.
Research and Innovation:
Collaborate with the R&D team to trial new crop varieties, irrigation technologies, and regenerative agriculture practices.
Document best practices and support the development of training modules for smallholder farmers.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, Crop Science, Agronomy, Agricultural Engineering, or related field. A Master's degree is an added advantage.
Experience: 8 - 10 years of progressive farm management experience, with at least 3 years in tropical/sub-Saharan Africa.
Technical Skills:
Proven expertise in large-scale irrigated crop production (centre pivot, drip, sprinkler).
Hands-on knowledge of farm machinery operation and maintenance.
Familiarity with integrated pest management, soil fertility management, and post-harvest technologies.
Soft Skills: Strong leadership, cross-cultural communication, problem-solving, and training abilities.
Language: Appreciable level of communication in English is mandatory; knowledge of French is an advantage.
Certifications: Any relevant professional certifications are a plus.
