ROLE OVERVIEW


We are seeking a talented Frontend Software Developer specializing in React technology to design and build the user-facing interfaces. This role focuses on delivering mobile-first, low-bandwidth frontend interfaces optimized for rural users, with strong emphasis on user experience (UX), accessibility, and offline capabilities. You will translate backend services into intuitive, responsive, and engaging user experiences that serve partners across Kenya.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

FRONTEND DEVELOPMENT AND FEATURE DELIVERY

Mobile-first development - Design and implement mobile-first, responsive web applications using React and modern frontend technologies, optimized for rural users with:


Low-bandwidth optimization
Compatibility with low-end devices
Simplified interfaces for users with low digital literacy


Progressive Web Application (PWA) Technology- Build PWAs that provide app-like experiences including:


Offline capabilities (service workers, Indexed DB for caching)
Push notifications
Fast loading times even on slow networks
User Interface Implementation - Build responsive, mobile-first interfaces for web and mobile applications covering all platform modules


USER EXPERIENCE (UX) & DESIGN


User Research - Conduct user research and usability testing with target users including farmers, agripreneurs, and field teams to understand their needs and challenges.


UI/UX Design


Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs
Design intuitive user flows for complex processes (verification, certification, market matching, payment release)
Ensure accessibility standards (WCAG) are met
Implement consistent design systems and component libraries


User-Centric Solutions - Work closely with field teams to understand the unique needs of rural users and deliver solutions that are:


Culturally appropriate
Easy to navigate
Accessible to users with varying literacy levels


API INTEGRATION AND COLLABORATION

API consumption - Integrate with backend RESTful APIs for all platform functionality including:


User authentication
Transaction processing
Verification workflows
Real-time reporting dashboards
WebSocket connections for live updates


Stakeholder collaboration - Work closely with:


Backend developers to define API requirements
Business Analysts and Product Owners to refine requirements
Field teams to validate designs and gather feedback


QUALITY ASSURANCE AND TESTING

Cross-browser/device testing - Conduct extensive testing on:


Various devices (feature phones, smartphones, tablets, desktops)
Multiple browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera Mini)
Different network conditions (2G, 3G, 4G, offline)


Performance optimization - Monitor and optimize frontend performance including:


Page load times
First Contentful Paint (FCP)
Time to Interactive (TTI)
Lighthouse scores


DOCUMENTATION AND MENTORSHIP

Documentation - Maintain comprehensive documentation including:


Component libraries and design systems
Technical architecture
API integration guides
User guides and training materials
Mentorship - Mentor junior frontend developers and support onboarding of new team members.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE


Education - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, Graphic Design (with tech focus), or a related field.
Experience - 5+ years of experience in frontend software development with 3+ years of advanced proficiency in React.


Technical skills


React - Expert-level experience with React.js, including Hooks, Context API, and state management (Redux or Zustand)
Modern JavaScript - Advanced proficiency in ES6+, TypeScript, and modern frontend build tools (Webpack, Vite)
Progressive Web Apps - Proven experience building PWAs with service workers, offline caching, and push notifications
Mobile-first design - Strong portfolio demonstrating mobile-first, responsive design
API Integration - Experience consuming RESTful APIs and WebSockets
CSS - Proficiency with CSS frameworks (Tailwind CSS, Material-UI) and responsive design principles
Version control - Expertise with Git and Gitlab workflows
Testing: Experience with frontend testing frameworks (Jest, React Testing Library)


UI/UX Skills


Design tools - Proficiency with design tools (Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch)
User research - Experience with user research, usability testing, and gathering user feedback
Prototyping- Ability to create wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes
Accessibility - Understanding of WCAG accessibility standards and inclusive design
User-centered design - Proven track record of designing for users with varying digital literacy levels


Bonus skills


USSD/SMS - Experience with Africa's Talking or other USSD/SMS platforms
Mapping - Experience with mapping libraries (Leaflet, Mapbox, Google Maps API)
Mobile development - Experience with React Native for mobile app development
Agribusiness domain - Understanding of agribusiness, supply chain, or agricultural systems
