Job Summary


Responsible for supporting the management of the company's legal affairs, including overseeing litigation, facilitating settlements, and pursuing recovery efforts. The Legal Officer will work closely with external advocates, internal teams, and senior management to safeguard the company's legal interests.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:


Receiving summons and determining whether liability attaches on the part of the Company.
Forwarding cases to our advocates and giving them instructions on how the cases are to be handled.
Giving our advocates instructions on whether the suits in court should proceed for trial or they should be negotiated out of court to avoid escalation of costs on confirmed injuries.
Perusing through correspondence and opinions from our advocates.
Organizing for witnesses to attend court and our advocate's offices for pre-trial briefing.
Giving instructions to our advocates on the cases where the plaintiffs need to go to the doctors for a second medical examination.
Responding to all advocates correspondence and ensuring up to date information is in each file.
Review of and determining next course of action e.g. appeals.
Preparing any legal report as and when requested.
To periodically review legal files to ensure accurate reserves are maintained and to ensure the files are up to date.
In liaison with the Claims Manager, pursue recovery for the Company
Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor from time to time.


Qualifications


Bachelor's degree in Law (LLB) or equivalent qualification.
Postgraduate diploma in law (Admission to the bar and holder of a current practicing certificate is a requirement)
Computer literate in MS Office and other office applications.
A minimum of 1 years' experience in handling legal matters.


Skills and competencies


Working knowledge of Insurance law and practice is an added advantage.
Proven experience in handling legal cases, litigation, or corporate law.
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Ability to assess legal risks and make sound recommendations.
Attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple cases simultaneously.
