Job Description
My client (FMCG/Manufacturing) is seeking an experienced and hands-on Maintenance Manager based in Richards Bay.
The Maintenance Manager is responsible for planning, managing, and overseeing all plant maintenance activities to ensure uninterrupted production, optimal plant integrity, and compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
The role requires close collaboration with operations, engineering, and technical teams to maintain equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and support continuous improvement in a high-paced manufacturing environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintenance Planning & Management
Develop Maintenance related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for use by maintenance and/or plant personnel.
Actively manage asset care processes in order to achieve lower equipment downtime, reduced costs, better asset performance, and increased/improved asset life through asset reliability programmes i.e., Planned/Predetermined, Preventive, Breakdown/corrective/Autonomous, predictive, and condition-based Maintenance.
Formulate and lead implementation of periodic maintenance plans (predictive, preventive and condition-based monitoring) as per Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
Plan and actively manage shutdowns and Preventative Maintenance Cyclic plans (periodic job cards and works orders) by ensuring availability of spares, external service providers, internal resource planning, compliance with all safety procedures. and timely completion of scheduled jobs/tasks.
Perform legitimate activities as required.
Contractor Management
Scope projects and/or collaboratively scope projects with relevant Project Managers in line with delegation of authority.
Analyse contractor offerings and recommend the most suitable contractor for approval by senior management.
Ensure that contractors have all the documentation (safety, method statements, permit to work etc) to perform work on site.
Co-ordinate the services of all maintenance contractors and ensure work quality management during execution and that all projects are completed in line with service level agreements.
Ensure that all project completion documentation is submitted (job cards/time sheets; drawings; invoices; completion certificates etc.) to relevant stakeholders.
Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, Quality & Food Safety (SHERQFS) Management
Ensure that all legal requirements as per OHSACT and Regulations are implemented and performed periodically to comply with relevant legislative requirements and standards.
Ensure all regulatory checks/inspections and legal documents are done periodically (yearly structural inspections; lifting equipment inspections and load testing (quarterly/bi-annually); equipment calibrations; boiler statutory checks; pressure vessels statutory checks; periodic steam line non-destructive testing etc)
Develop and maintain SHERQFS systems and processes for the plant.
Participate in incident investigation, follow through on required corrective action, and ensure that loops are closed.
Manage preparation for SHERQFS audits and pro-actively rectify identified risks and deviations from standards.
Resource Management
Maintain an updated critical spares matrix.
Keep records of and monitor assets life cycle.
Formulate plant-wide repairs and maintenance budget for approval.
Oversee timeous procurement of resources (spares, labour, consumables, or services) in line with the Plant Maintenance Plan and/or service level agreements.
Monitor expenditure, optimize resource utilization, and ensure budgetary compliance.
Report on maintenance expenditure against budget, monthly and/or as requested.
People Management
Assess manpower model including shift pattern, and propose a model that optimises productivity, cost, and safety, as and when necessary.
Plan and hire suitably skilled candidates in the right quantities and positions.
Prioritize and assign tasks to relevant personnel.
Manage the performance, employee recognition, training and development and discipline of team members, in a way that ensures productivity, compliance and stable workplace relations.
Oversee time and attendance of employees and control absenteeism and overtime.
Stakeholder Management
Build and maintain relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders (local and group) involved in the maintenance and production processes.
Provide timely feedback on maintenance progress and status and other productivity related matters.
Continuous Improvement
Stay abreast of and implement appropriate modern world-class Maintenance and manufacturing thinking and techniques to ensure efficient and effective operations.
Manage Maintenance and production improvement initiatives and projects.
Minimum Requirements:
Education and Experience:
BTech Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering equivalent to NQF 7/10
Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) is essential
5 years post-training maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment, 3 of which in a management position.
Working experience in managing employee relations is essential
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS), eg: SAP Plant Maintenance (PM) Module.
Understanding of Occupational Health & Safety Act (OSHAct), related regulations and Major Hazard Installation (MHI) knowledge
