Job Summary
The Material Inspector is responsible for inspecting, verifying, and ensuring all materials used in EPC and fabrication activities comply with project specifications, codes, and quality standards. The role places strong emphasis on material traceability, certification review, and inspection of piping, structural, and welding consumables throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Incoming Material Inspection
Inspect all incoming materials (pipes, fittings, flanges, valves, structural steel, plates).
Verify materials against Purchase Orders (PO), Material Requisitions (MR), and approved specifications.
Check for physical damage, corrosion, and dimensional compliance.
Certification & Traceability
Review and verify Mill Test Certificates (MTCs), Certificates of Conformance (CoC).
Ensure compliance with standards such as ASME, ASTM, API, ISO.
Confirm heat number traceability and ensure proper transfer to cut pieces during fabrication.
Maintain traceability records throughout fabrication and installation stages.
Fabrication Material Control
Verify materials before fabrication (cutting, welding, fit-up).
Ensure correct material grade and specification are issued to the workshop.
Monitor identification marking and color coding systems.
Confirm compliance of welding consumables (electrodes, wires, flux) with approved WPS.
Welding & Consumables Inspection
Inspect storage conditions of welding consumables (e.g., ovens, temperature control).
Verify batch numbers and certifications of consumables.
Ensure proper issuance and control of consumables in line with QA/QC procedures.
Non-Conformance Management
Raise Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for defective or non-compliant materials.
Follow up on corrective actions (repair, replacement, or concession approval).
Ensure segregation of rejected materials.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain detailed inspection records and material logs.
Prepare Material Receiving Inspection Reports (MRIR).
Update material tracking systems and support document control processes.
Coordination
Liaise with QA/QC engineers, fabrication supervisors, warehouse teams, and procurement.
Support production by ensuring only approved materials are released for fabrication.
Compliance & Standards
Ensure adherence to project specifications, ITPs (Inspection Test Plans), and quality procedures.
Support internal/external audits and client inspections.
Ensure proper preservation and storage of materials.
Qualifications & Requirements
HND/bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field.
4 - 8 years of experience in EPC and fabrication environments (oil & gas preferred).
Strong knowledge of piping materials, structural steel, and welding consumables.
Familiarity with codes and standards: ASME, ASTM, API, ISO.
Ability to read and interpret isometric drawings, P&IDs, and material specifications.
