Requirements :
Appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
Current registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
Passed Part 1 exams of the South African College of Psychiatry.

Duties :
Present oneself in a professional manner and formal attire with clear identification of oneself. Clinical assessment of psychiatric patients including the formulation, development and execution of evidence based and compassionate patient care plans. The application of cost containment measures in service delivery is important.
Assessment and management of medical and psychiatric emergencies. Counselling and education of patients and families. Proper clinical record keeping and preparation of referral letters, statistics and discharge summaries for all patients. Proper record keeping of all laboratory results. Participation in ward / departmental administrative duties.
Commitment to highest level of care, ethics, professionalism and punctuality. Work responsibly within a multi-disciplinary team and reporting of all conflicts of interest and corruption.
Medical officers will be expected to perform clinical and overtime duties at Helen Joseph Hospital. ACADEMIC DUTIES: Active participation and compulsory attendance of the psychiatry teaching programme at Helen Joseph Hospital. Teach and supervise medical and undergraduate students, medical interns and other allied professionals. Actively participate in the organisation and examination of medical students.
