Job Description
We are seeking a full-time Commissioning Editor based in our Cape Town office to shape and grow our natural history publishing list under the Briza imprint
This is a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of science, storytelling and the natural world. Working closely with the Briza Publisher, you will be responsible for identifying, developing and championing books that illuminate nature in all its complexity.
You will work closely with authors, editors, photographers and designers to bring projects from conception to published book.
Key responsibilities
Develop and manage a distinctive, commercially successful natural history list with clear editorial vision
Identify, commission and negotiate contracts with authors, and cultivate those relationships over time
Evaluate proposals and manuscripts, providing editorial feedback and guidance
Collaborate with marketing and sales teams to position each title effectively
Monitor trends in natural history and the broader trade market
What we are looking for
We welcome applications from two distinct backgrounds. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in either of the following:
Route A — Publishing professional
Proven editorial experience of three to five years in trade or illustrated non-fiction publishing
Demonstrable track record as an editor or commissioning editor
Experience managing the full publishing cycle with strict adherence to deadlines
Strong relationships with authors
A genuine enthusiasm for natural history
or
Route B — Natural history expert
Specialist knowledge in the natural sciences or nature writing
Recognised expertise in a field such as ecology, zoology, botany, ornithology, conservation biology or nature writing
Strong existing network within the natural history, scientific or environmental community
Experience communicating complex ideas to non-specialist audiences (writing, broadcasting, education or similar)
Demonstrable editorial judgement - evidenced through curation, writing, reviewing or commissioning in any capacity
Willingness to develop publishing skills with structured training
In addition, all candidates should possess excellent written English, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under deadline.
