Octavia Carbon is the Global South's first Direct Air Capture (DAC) company dedicated to combating climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. We design and build low-cost DAC technology that leverages Kenya's geothermal energy, geology, and talent to accelerate DAC down the cost curve. Position Summary: 

Octavia Carbon seeks a Policy and Community Engagement Associate to lead the company’s community engagement initiatives, support policy advocacy, and secure necessary permits. The ideal candidate understands the permits and licenses required for company administration and plant operations, must demonstrate strong relationship management skills, and must deeply understand climate regulations in Kenya and internationally.  

 

Responsibilities:

Regulatory Compliance 

  • Proactively monitoring and ensuring compliance with all applicable local, national, and international regulations. 
  • Proactively engage with compliance authorities to understand compliance responsibilities. 

Permit acquisition, renewal and risk assessment 

  • Identifying, applying for, and obtaining all necessary permits and licenses for company administration and DAC plant operations. This includes but is not limited to environmental permits/audits, OSH permits, and operational licenses. 
  • Identify and mitigate potential compliance/regulatory risks. 

Community Engagement 

  • Manage all active partnerships on the community front. 
  • Actively seek out new partnerships to advance the company’s interests in community engagement. 
  • Scout for and grow community group projects for the zero-interest loan program.

Qualifications 

Education:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in business/law or a related field (Environmental Science). 
  • Professional certifications in environmental compliance are a plus. 

Experience:  

  • 1-2 years experience working in environmental compliance, preferably in the Carbon Markets. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NEMA regulations and the permitting process in the context of environmental technologies. 
  • Knowledge of carbon markets and climate change regulations. 
  • Experience in developing and operationalising community projects. 

Skills 

  • Ability to interpret laws and regulations, including those related to environmental compliance, both locally and internationally. 
  • Strong research and analytical skills to evaluate policy changes and their business impact. 
  • Strong understanding of strategic business partnerships and ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Negotiation and diplomacy skills.
