The successful candidate will be responsible for compliance, ethics training, governance oversight, REIT and legal reporting in the region. The role can be based in Kenya, Uganda or South Africa.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the regional compliance lead, overseeing implementation and effectiveness of the compliance and ethics framework across African markets.
Implement global compliance policies, provide Delegation of Authority (DOA) guidance, oversee risk management and reporting, including REIT reporting, and ensure alignment with corporate requirements.
Develop and deliver compliance, FCPA and Code of Conduct training for employees and vendors, promoting a strong culture of integrity, accountability and ethical business conduct.
Ensure required compliance provisions are incorporated into third-party agreements, review negotiated compliance terms, and oversee regional OFAC/sanctions screening.
Lead and coordinate ethics and compliance investigations with local legal teams, internal stakeholders and external advisors, providing legal guidance on privilege, confidentiality, evidence preservation, remediation and reporting obligations.
Monitor the performance of the compliance function, establish and track KPIs, identify compliance risks and recommend process improvements and efficiencies.
Provide timely compliance advice to internal stakeholders, prioritize regional compliance requirements and manage external counsel and service providers where necessary.
Lead, supervise and develop the Regional Internal Affairs/compliance team, establishing objectives and performance expectations while fostering collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement and high standards of delivery.
Key Qualifications
Graduate degree in law and admission/licensure to practice in a relevant jurisdiction; postgraduate specialization in corporate law, international business or a related field preferred.
Progressive legal experience, preferably within a multinational organization, including at least 5 years as legal counsel in a multi-market or cross-border role.
Strong understanding of international compliance principles, regulatory requirements and legal practices across multiple jurisdictions.
Demonstrated ability to apply legal expertise and commercial judgment to complex business matters, resolve conflicts and provide practical, policy-compliant solutions.
Ability to formulate and clearly articulate legal recommendations and work effectively with legal and non-legal stakeholders across functions, cultures and geographies.
Excellent analytical ability, attention to detail and organizational skills, with demonstrated capacity to manage substantial and competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, with the ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to improve legal and compliance processes, productivity and decision-making.
Strong academic credentials, current knowledge of legal and business trends affecting multinational organizations in Africa, fluency in English, and additional African language capabilities considered advantageous.
