Job Description :


The role of Sales Engineer is to clearly articulate client needs and recommend solutions that Upstream Technology can provide. The Sales Engineer will lead the development of proposals/ quotations for solutions that meet client needs.


Your role will include but not limited to:

Client Engagement & Consultation:


Engage clients on products and services offered by Upstream Technology with the aim of creating interest and desire for Upstream Technology solutions
Identify, target, and develop new clients beyond the current De Beers Group pipeline
Act as the primary client owner from first engagement through to contract award and ongoing relationship management
Position Upstream Technology as a preferred supplier through credible technical and commercial engagement
Support diversification into iron ore, lithium, and adjacent commodities


Sales & Business Development


Support the Senior Business Development Manager in forming strategic partnerships
Own the full sales cycle end‑to‑end, including opportunity identification, scoping, proposal development, negotiation, and contract close
Develop and grow a forward‑looking three‑year order book
Create pipeline where none currently exists, with a strong external client focus
Support strategic partnerships aligned to business growth objectives


Technical Scoping & Solution Shaping


Lead early‑stage technical discussions to understand client challenges and shape viable EPCM solutions
Translate client needs into clear, scoped, and costed project studies and proposals
Leverage internal technical teams for detailed engineering while retaining overall solution ownership
Maintain clear boundaries between sales accountability and engineering delivery
Provide pre-and-post sales technical support to ensure continuity and client confidence.


Proposals, Commercials & Negotiation


Lead the development of technically and commercially robust proposals
Manage project studies typically ZAR 2 - 30 million, with downstream execution potential exceeding ZAR 1 billion
Contribute to pricing models in collaboration with commercial and technical teams
Negotiate within delegated authority limits, adhering to governance and Exco approval frameworks


This role is in the Upstream Technology Department at a GBG6 level reporting to the Senior Business Development Manager

Qualifications:


University Degree within Engineering or Technology disciplines.


Experience:


More than 10 years of experience in the Mining or Engineering field post qualification
Strong background in sales and well-developed client relationships
Substantive (more than 3 yrs) experience in EPCM services
Operations experience before moving into sales is desirable
Knowledge of project management methodologies, tools and techniques
Experience is drafting proposals, bidding for work & managing engineering contracts
Experience in working on large scale, complex initiatives.
Experience of developing processes, procedures, controls documentation
Proven successful track record of working in customer centric / relationship management environment
