About the Role

Our client, a reputable professional services firm, is seeking to recruit a highly driven and experienced Tax Advisory and Audit Business Development Officer. The successful candidate will be responsible for growing the client's Tax and Audit practice into a leading revenue centre while ensuring high standards of tax compliance, audit quality, financial management, and regulatory compliance.

The role holder will be responsible for originating and converting new business, leading high-quality delivery of tax advisory, tax compliance, audit, and assurance engagements, and serving as a trusted advisor to a growing portfolio of SMEs, mid-market corporates, NGOs, and donor-funded organisations. The successful candidate will support both the client's internal operations as well as outsourced client engagements.

Business Development Responsibilities


Develop and execute a monthly practice growth plan with quarterly revenue, pipeline, and client acquisition targets agreed with the client's management.
Originate qualified leads through professional networks, referral partnerships (law firms, banks, incubators, development programmes), events, and targeted outreach, maintaining an active pipeline of at least five (5) clients per month.
Develop at least four (4) active strategic referral partnerships per year that generate qualified leads.
Produce monthly thought leadership (tax information, Finance Act analyses, audit readiness guides, webinars) that positions our client as a credible market authority.
Represent our client at ICPAK events, sector forums, and professional bodies to build brand visibility.
Support the onboarding and development of a team of tax and audit professionals in line with the practice growth plan, scaling capacity ahead of demand.


Client Relationship Management Responsibilities


Implement a client service framework comprising defined engagement agreements, proactive communication calendars, and post-engagement satisfaction reviews.
Achieve and maintain a client retention rate of 90%+ on recurring engagements and a client satisfaction score of 85%+ (measured through structured feedback surveys).
Identify client needs beyond the current scope and convert them into advisory opportunities, growing average revenue per client year on year.
Resolve client escalations within five (5) working days and institute corrective measures to prevent recurrence.


Tax Advisory, Audit and Compliance Responsibilities


Oversee the client's internal tax compliance by ensuring all statutory filings (Corporate Income Tax, VAT, PAYE, levies, etc.) are accurate and submitted on time, with zero penalties.
Lead delivery of tax compliance engagements including Corporate Income Tax, VAT, PAYE, Withholding Tax, Excise Duty, NSSF, SHIF, Housing Levy, and Instalment Tax filings via iTax, maintaining a 100% on-time filing rate and a tax compliance accuracy rate of 98%+ (zero preventable penalties or interest).
Deliver high-value tax advisory services, including tax planning and compliance advisory.
Lead tax health checks and tax risk reviews, producing prioritised findings with quantified exposures and remediation plans.
Represent clients before the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in audits, compliance checks, objections, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes, and appeals before the Tax Appeals Tribunal while maintaining a documented success/settlement record.
Monitor legislative and regulatory developments, including Finance Acts, KRA public notices, court decisions, and Tax Appeals Tribunal rulings, issuing timely client alerts within ten (10) working days of publication.
Advise the client's management on financial, tax, and regulatory risks affecting the business and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.


Audit & Assurance Responsibilities


Lead statutory audit engagements from planning through completion, ensuring compliance with applicable auditing standards and professional requirements.
Review financial statements, evaluate internal controls, identify key business risks, and provide practical recommendations for improvement.
Ensure audit engagements are completed efficiently while maintaining high technical and professional quality standards.
Prepare audit reports and communicate findings effectively to clients and senior management.


Required Qualifications and Experience


CPA(K) fully qualified with active ICPAK membership in good standing, or ACCA/CA equivalent.
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Economics, or a related field from a recognised university.
Minimum of three (3) years' progressive experience in tax and audit within a professional services environment.
Demonstrable business development track record, including clients originated, revenue generated, proposals won, or a portfolio/practice grown. Candidates should be prepared to provide evidence of these achievements during the interview process.
Proven experience leading statutory audits end-to-end and representing clients before the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
Proficiency in audit software (e.g., CaseWare, Draftworx, or equivalent), accounting platforms (QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, ERP systems), and advanced Microsoft Excel. Data analytics skills will be an added advantage.
Strong knowledge of Kenyan tax legislation, financial reporting standards, auditing standards, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
High ethical standards with a demonstrated commitment to integrity, independence, confidentiality, and professional conduct.
Strong commercial judgement with the ability to balance business growth, quality, client service, and risk management.
