The WASH-Sanitation and Hygiene Assistant will be responsible for supporting the day-to-day implementation of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) activities. This includes supervising community-based sanitation activities, and conducting hygiene promotion to improve the health and living environments of refugees and host populations.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Sanitation: Supervise the construction and maintenance of household and communal latrines, ensuring compliance with PWJ and UNHCR technical standards.
Hygiene Promotion: Conduct community outreach sessions on handwashing, safe water storage, and waste management to prevent waterborne diseases.
Monitoring & Reporting: Assist in water quality testing (residual chlorine monitoring) and collect field data for monthly progress reports.
Community Engagement: Work closely with WASH Committees and community leaders to ensure project ownership and sustainability.
Emergency Response: Support rapid WASH assessments and distribution of hygiene kits
during disease outbreaks or influxes of new arrivals.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Degree in Public Health, or a related field.
Experience: At least 2 years of experience in WASH interventions, preferably in an NGO set up. Experience in a refugee camp setting (Kakuma or Dadaab) will be an added advantage.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in water quality testing, basic plumbing, or construction supervision of sanitation facilities is added advantage
Soft Skills: Ability to work under pressure in hardship environments and strong interpersonal skills for community mobilization.
