Principal Accountabilities

(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)


Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to equipment, buildings and other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.
Cover surfaces with canvas drop cloth or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster; or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors in order to determine work requirements.
Remove fixtures such as frames, door knobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.
Remove old finishes by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water and/or abrasive blasting.
Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, and/or sanding machines.
Erect scaffolding and swing gates, or set up ladders, to work above ground level.
Waterproof buildings, using waterproofing membranes and caulking.
Perform other qualified duties as assigned.

Title of Supervisor: Facilities Maintenance Specialist or his designee


Knowledge & Skills


Knowledge of preparation and painting of equipment, buildings and other structures, support equipment, and components, for both interior and exterior work.
Ability to work independently with good decision-making skills.
Ability to recognize occupational hazards of the painting trade and take precautionary measures as needed.
Additional knowledge/skills may be required by contract or assignment.


Experience & Education


High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Two (2) years of experience in a paint preparation, painting, sanding and scuffing or related field required.
