Job Summary


We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Scientist with a specialty in Microbiology to join our laboratory team.
You will play a vital role in supporting accurate diagnosis and effective patient care through the timely, reliable testing and analysis of clinical specimens.


Key Responsibilities


Receive, prepare, culture and analyse clinical specimens including blood, urine, swabs, sputum and other body fluids.
Identify microorganisms using appropriate microscopy, culture, biochemical and automated testing methods.
Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing and support the reporting of clinically significant results.
Maintain quality-control procedures, equipment calibration, reagent stock and accurate laboratory records.
Review, validate and communicate test results in line with laboratory procedures and turnaround-time targets.
Escalate critical or unusual findings promptly to the appropriate clinician or laboratory lead.
Follow all infection-prevention, biosafety, waste-disposal and laboratory safety requirements.
Participate in internal quality assurance, external quality assessment and continuous improvement activities.
Support the training and supervision of interns, students or junior laboratory staff where required.


Qualifications and Experience


Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or a closely related discipline with 1-3 years experience.
Current professional licence/registration as required by the relevant regulatory body.
Demonstrable experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory; post-qualification experience is preferred.
Sound knowledge of bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, specimen processing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems and quality-management practices is an advantage.
