Description
The Operations Manager will be responsible for the effective management of the Company's day-to-day operational activities, with particular responsibility for fleet management, driver administration, vehicle and asset management, maintenance coordination, logistics, safety and operational efficiency.
The roleholder will also ensure that company vehicles, drivers, equipment and other operational assets are available, safe, compliant, properly utilized and maintained to support uninterrupted business operations.
The Operations Manager will also establish effective systems for monitoring vehicle performance, driver behaviour, fuel consumption, maintenance costs, asset utilization and operational risks, while ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and company requirements.
Responsibilities
Fleet Management:
Manage the Company's fleet of vehicles and ensure optimal availability and utilization.
Maintain an accurate and up-to-date fleet register.
Monitor vehicle allocation, deployment, utilization and availability.
Develop and implement preventive and corrective maintenance schedules.
Ensure vehicles are serviced and maintained according to manufacturer recommendations and company standards.
Monitor vehicle downtime and take corrective action to minimize operational disruption.
Coordinate vehicle inspections, repairs, servicing and roadworthiness requirements.
Monitor fuel consumption and investigate unusual variances.
Track vehicle mileage, maintenance history, insurance, licensing and other statutory documentation.
Evaluate fleet performance and recommend replacement, disposal or acquisition of vehicles when required.
Establish controls to minimize vehicle misuse, unauthorized usage and avoidable operating costs.
Driver Administration & Management:
Manage the recruitment, onboarding, deployment and administration of drivers.
Maintain complete and accurate driver records, including licences, certifications, medical/fitness documentation and other required records.
Develop driver schedules and ensure appropriate allocation of drivers to vehicles and assignments.
Monitor driver attendance, punctuality, availability and productivity.
Establish and enforce driver performance standards.
Investigate driver-related incidents, complaints, accidents and policy violations.
Recommend appropriate corrective or disciplinary actions where required.
Develop initiatives to improve driver retention, professionalism and performance.
Asset Management:
Maintain a comprehensive register of vehicles, equipment, tools, technology and other operational assets.
Ensure all assets are properly tagged, assigned and documented.
Monitor asset utilization, condition and location.
Establish asset inspection and maintenance schedules.
Ensure assets are adequately protected against loss, theft, misuse or unauthorized disposal.
Conduct periodic physical verification of assets.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree or HND in Transport Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management or a related discipline.
5 - 8 years' relevant experience in operations, fleet management, logistics, transportation or asset management.
At least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
Demonstrable experience managing drivers and vehicle fleets.
Practical experience in vehicle maintenance coordination.
Experience managing operational assets and service providers.
Good knowledge of fleet documentation, vehicle compliance and safety requirements.
