Purpose of the Position
The Safety and Security Assistant will support the implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of safety and security policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure the safety of staff, assets, and beneficiaries, in accordance with organizational policies and UN Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS).
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Security Operations & Monitoring
Support the implementation of the organization's Security Risk Management (SRM) measures.
Monitor local security conditions and report incidents, threats, and trends to the supervisor promptly.
Assist in maintaining security logs, incident reports, and daily situation updates.
Access Control & Asset Protection
Assist in controlling access to offices, guesthouses, and project sites in line with security procedures.
Support the safeguarding of organizational assets, including vehicles, equipment, and facilities.
Staff Safety & Movement
Support staff movement tracking, radio/phone check-ins, and compliance with travel clearance procedures.
Assist in enforcing curfews, movement restrictions, and safety advisories when required.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
Assist in the implementation of emergency response plans, evacuations, and drills.
Provide support during security incidents, emergencies, or crises as directed.
Coordination & Reporting
Liaise with guards, community leaders, and local security stakeholders as appropriate.
Support security briefings and induction for new staff, visitors, and partners.
Compliance & Conduct
Ensure compliance with organizational security policies, Code of Conduct, and humanitarian principles.
Maintain confidentiality and neutrality at all times.
Required Qualifications
Education
Minimum of an OND.
Certification or training in security management, safety, or related fields is an advantage.
Experience
Minimum of 2-3 years' experience in safety and security, preferably with an NGO, UN agency, or INGO.
Experience working in complex or humanitarian settings is highly desirable.
Skills & Competencies
Good understanding of security risk management principles.
Ability to observe, assess, and report security risks accurately.
Strong communication and reporting skills.
Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
Demonstrated integrity, discretion, and respect for diversity.
Languages
Fluency in English/Hausa required.
Knowledge of local languages is an asset.
