Job Role
The Scrap Yard Operative is responsible for supporting the safe handling, sorting, preparation, storage, and movement of scrap metal and other materials within the scrap yard. The role supports the supply of suitable scrap materials to production while maintaining safe and organized yard operations.
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Ensure efficient handling and organization of scrap materials.
Support timely supply of scrap to production.
Maintain proper segregation of different scrap materials.
Reduce material contamination and wastage.
Maintain safe and organized working areas.
Comply with safety and environmental procedures.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Scrap Handling & Sorting
Receive and assist in sorting scrap materials.
Separate materials according to established requirements.
Identify and report unsuitable or contaminated materials.
Assist in loading and movement of scrap within designated areas.
Ensure scrap is stored in the correct locations.
Production Support
Prepare scrap materials for use in production.
Support timely movement of scrap to the melt shop.
Coordinate with production personnel regarding material requirements.
Maintain accurate records where required.
Safety & Environmental Compliance
Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.
Wear appropriate PPE.
Maintain safe working distances from machinery and moving equipment.
Report hazards, accidents, spills, and unsafe conditions.
Follow waste handling and environmental requirements.
Housekeeping
Keep the scrap yard clean and organized.
Remove unnecessary materials and obstructions.
Assist with cleaning and maintenance of the work area.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum KCSE qualification or equivalent.
Previous experience in a steel plant, scrap yard, manufacturing, construction, or industrial environment is an added advantage.
Ability to perform physically demanding duties.
Ability to work outdoors and under varying environmental conditions.
Willingness to work shifts.
