About the Role
The Internal Auditor will be responsible for providing independent assurance on the effectiveness of the organisation's internal controls, risk management processes, governance frameworks and operational procedures.
The successful candidate will conduct internal audits across relevant business and operational functions, identify control gaps and areas of risk, assess compliance with applicable regulatory and internal requirements, and provide practical recommendations to strengthen the organisation's control environment and operational effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and execute risk-based internal audit plans covering financial, operational and business processes.
Conduct internal audits and reviews across relevant departments and business functions.
Evaluate the effectiveness and adequacy of internal controls, policies and procedures.
Review financial and operational processes to identify control weaknesses, inefficiencies, risks and potential areas of exposure.
Assess compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, internal policies and established procedures.
Review the adequacy of controls around financial transactions, investment activities, operational processes and reporting.
Identify control deficiencies and assess their potential impact on the organisation.
Prepare clear and comprehensive internal audit reports outlining findings, risks, root causes and recommendations.
Provide practical and actionable recommendations to address identified control gaps and improve business processes.
Monitor and follow up on agreed management actions and audit recommendations to ensure timely implementation.
Conduct periodic reviews to assess whether previously identified issues have been appropriately resolved.
Support investigations into suspected control breaches, irregularities or other financial and operational concerns where required.
Maintain appropriate audit documentation and working papers in accordance with professional standards.
Collaborate with management and relevant business units to understand processes, discuss audit findings and facilitate improvements.
Provide management with insights on emerging operational, financial, compliance and control risks.
Support risk assessment and the continuous improvement of the organisation's internal control framework.
Assist with external audits, regulatory reviews and other assurance exercises where required.
Keep abreast of relevant regulatory, accounting, audit and industry developments affecting the organisation.
Perform other audit, risk and control-related responsibilities as may be assigned by Management.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or a related discipline.
A professional qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIA, ICAN or equivalent is required/preferred.
Minimum of 3 years' relevant experience in internal audit, external audit, compliance, risk management or a related function, preferably within financial services, asset management, investment management or stockbroking.
Good understanding of internal audit principles, risk management and internal control frameworks.
Knowledge of financial services operations and applicable regulatory requirements.
Familiarity with SEC regulations and other relevant regulatory requirements within the Nigerian financial services industry will be an advantage.
Strong analytical, investigative and problem-solving skills.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify control weaknesses and inconsistencies.
Strong report-writing and documentation skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate audit findings effectively to different levels of management.
Ability to work independently, exercise sound professional judgement and maintain objectivity.
Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple audit assignments and deadlines.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant audit, accounting or financial systems.
High level of integrity, confidentiality and professional ethics.
