Role Context
Strategic Contribution
Co-develop and oversee the implementation of the Mining strategy by creating alignment between the Mineral Resources Management (MRM) strategy and using the strategies as enablers of the vision within the section, providing critical insights and exposure to the current state of the Department to enhance the commercial position of Tharisa Minerals' mining operations (TM).
Position the MRM Department as an enabler of the Mining strategy, by taking a proactive role in steering Departmental activities aligned to the broader strategy, to aid the organisation in achieving its strategic objectives.
Keep abreast of changes in relevant guidelines and other legislation, to make recommendations where policies, processes and/or procedures require amendment.
Develop, enhance and implement policies, processes and Operational procedures that are within the respective Department aimed at the enhancement of service delivery and overall productivity within the MRM Discipline.
Collaborate with the Engineering team to develop long-term and short-term mining plans that optimise resource extraction.
Compliance, Risk and Safety
Develop an ore reserves risk management matrix to identify, quantify, and manage the risks associated with the ore reserves which are likely to expose a worker to injury and illness.
Develop and lead the implementation of a risk management program to achieve discipline excellence (people, processes and tools).
Manage inter-discipline co-ordination, interface, and report on compliance issues, ensuring adherence to legal, health, safety, environmental and quality standards and requirements, to achieve discipline governance, audit and quality.
Monitor and evaluate mining activities to ensure compliance with resource extraction plans and recommend adjustments as needed.
Data Analytics and Reporting
Manage the maintenance of comprehensive databases of geological and resource data, ensuring the security thereof to enable operational monitoring and reporting.
Financial Management
Prepare, finalise and take ownership of the MRM's annual budget by compiling and analysing the relevant information to ensure Return on Investment (ROI) for the Mining Department.
Review and recommend changes to the annual MRM financial budget to ensure financial budget and controls contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Department and support the accomplishment of service delivery objectives.
Monitor short-term Departmental budgets by scrutinising and aligning spend within the Department, to support and drive effective and efficient functioning within budgetary constraints.
Monitor Departmental expenditure against budget allocations, requesting appropriate reallocation as required, to manage the prevention of unnecessary spend.
Comply with all financial, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and other Tharisa Minerals regulations and policies by facilitating the right actions, to reduce financial risk in the Department.
Create, maintain and work towards a realistic and detailed budget for the overall ore reserves acquisition project and sub-projects to support the optimisation of mineral utilisation.
Mineral Resources Management
Manage geological and geostatistical analyses to enable the assessment and estimation of mineral resources within the TM mining operations.
Manage and monitor ore reserves and resources, using data to make recommendations to executive management on access to additional reserves and resources.
Manage work relating to ore reserves and resources to ensure technical acceptability and integrity of work carried out.
Manage the ore reserves and resources to ensure security of supply and business sustainability.
Develop and evaluate optimal resource exploitation plans, Life of Mining Right plans and scenarios to align with strategic intent and existing business planning.
Manage the implementation of Corporate Standards within the MRM Department and sign off as the Competent Person, ensuring all relevant work activities have sign off approval prior to project kick-off.
Develop, implement, promote and monitor the MRM principles across the value chain, to manage the mining process from exploration to final product in an efficient and safe manner.
People Management
Engage in workforce planning initiatives for the Department, forecasting the skills required to meet business demands and driving upskilling initiatives to ensure the team remains competent and fit for purpose within their roles.
Manage the entire value chain of human resources-related aspects (i.e., recruitment and selection, performance management, skill development etc.) of the Department, with support from HR, by identifying strong and poor performers as well as the requirement for additional head count, ensuring all requirements are met for optimal delivery within the team.
Mentor, guide, and provide thought-leadership for the Department, sharing impactful knowledge and identifying opportunities for growth and improvement to drive the success of the team.
Create a high-performance culture for the Department by providing critical and timely feedback (both positive and critical), enabling individuals to improve and work as effectively as possible to meet business goals.
Project Management
Obtain adequate and balanced project management and other resources (where required) with functional management support to enable the coordination and successful management of projects.
Control project schedule(s) and related work through regular review meetings and coordinate the flow of project and technical information to ensure quick, effective communication.
Stakeholder Relations
Build, develop and maintain strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders by creating mutually beneficial opportunities for growth.
Utilise opportunities presented to enhance the relationship between management, unions and employees, and implement processes to maximise a collaborative working relationship.
Supervise contractors, sub-contractors, as well as health and safety officers to manage work relating to ore reserves and resources.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Grade 12 (NQF4)
BSc/BEng Degree (NQF7) or equivalent in Mining, Earth Sciences or similar
Professional registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP), Engineering Counsel of South Africa (ECSA) or the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM)
Qualified as the Competent Person to signoff statements or similar reports for Mines and Projects

Job-specific experience:
Minimum of between twelve to fifteen (12-15) years relevant experience, of which at least five to ten (5-10) years at Senior Management level with general oversight of an open pit mining operation
Experience/Exposure on MS Dynamics F&O, Reporting tools: MS Power BI
